Shaping the Future: Quattro Apprentices and Mentor Honoured at CPA Awards

26/07/2025

Three Quattro employees were recognised by the Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA) at their prestigious Stars of the Future Awards, which celebrate the rising stars and exceptional mentors shaping the future of the construction plant industry. Recognition at this year’s prestigious CPA Stars of the Future event highlights Quattro’s commitment to developing top-tier talent: from rising apprentices to the mentors guiding them.

The annual awards spotlight outstanding apprentices and technicians across various trades, along with those who support and nurture their growth. This year, judged by 14 industry professionals, the competition saw 21 regional and national categories, with judges clocking over 1,500 hours of assessment, making it the most competitive to date as colleges from around the UK entered their best candidates.

Quattro celebrated two South Region Apprentice Nominations as Oliver Noble (Hatfield) and Matthew Black (Lichfield) were both nominated for Plant Mechanic Apprentice of the Year  (South Region), an impressive and rare dual nomination not only from the same company, but from the same intake.

 Oliver Noble – Hatfield Depot

Oliver Noble – Hatfield Depot

Aged 18 and based in Welwyn Garden City, Oliver joined Quattro in 2023 after a successful 2022 work experience placement. Since then, he’s become an integral part of the Hatfield team, ensuring machinery is in top condition before heading out for hire. He’s especially keen on fault-finding and working on Kobelco 1559 and 1560 excavators.

“No two days are the same! That’s what I love about it.  I really enjoy the diagnosis aspect; finding any fault and learning to repair the RRVs.”

Now studying Land-based engineering Level 3 at NSCG Stafford College, Oliver is already ahead of schedule and has completed many of his Level 3 tasks. Nominated by the college for his standout work ethic and technical growth, he celebrated the award night in Coventry alongside his friend and fellow nominee, Matthew.

“It’s a real boost to be recognised, we push each other to do our best.  We’ve worked hard at college.  My family is very proud, I don’t think a day has gone by where my mum hasn’t asked me how it’s going!”

 Matthew Black – Lichfield Depot

Also 18, Matthew is based in Doxey, Staffordshire, and is entering his third year at NSCG Stafford, studying Land-Based Engineering. Working at Quattro’s Lichfield depot, Matthew has quickly made a name for himself with his appetite for learning and strong practical skills.

“I’ve always wanted to work with my hands and the rail industry is full of variety. Every machine is a chance to learn something new.”

Matthew is thriving in his role and proud of the recognition he’s earned.

“The nomination came as a surprise — it means a lot to me be seen for the hard work I’ve put in.  Oliver and I attended the awards ceremony together and we got to mingle and meet people from other companies which was nice.”

Mike Potts, Foreman Rail Fitter, Lichfield, talked of Matt’s natural aptitude for plant engineering.

"Matt’s enthusiasm shone through at his interview.  His conscientiousness is clear for all to see, he really wants to work on rail machinery.  Approving his nomination was an easy decision.  Matt is a bright sensible lad who has slotted right in to Quattro and will undoubtably do exceptionally well in the future.”

Mentor of the Year Nomination: Sean Goodwin

Talent can’t grow without guidance and Quattro’s success in this year’s awards is also thanks to the support behind the scenes.  Foreman Fitter Sean Goodwin was nominated for Mentor of the Year (South region) recognising his dedication, patience, and skill in developing young engineers across the business. On this occasion the nomination was submitted by colleagues for his work with Oliver Noble.

“I was surprised and honoured, but I thought they were joking, and so did my wife!  I’ve really just been ensuring that Oliver is coping and progressing to get where he needs to be.  He’s a fantastic kid, quick at learning, and he makes my life so easy.  His computer skills are ten times better than mine - I told him not to be shocked if I ask for tips.  I’m really proud of him, he’s doing so well at college.”

Sean’s nomination highlights how critical experienced mentors are in shaping confident, capable apprentices. “Yes, I think I’m proud of myself too! It feels incredible to be shortlisted.  It's great for the company, and even better for the industry to know that Quattro is feeding the best.”

Managing Director John Murphy praised all three nominations.

“Quattro is brimming with talent, and we’re committed to nurturing each and every individual.  Sean, Matthew and Oliver’s dedication and excellence is clearly getting noticed and recognised which is fantastic.  Being nominated is a true testament to their incredible work.  We’re tremendously proud to have more CPA stars in the Q-Army!”
